Quick Start Guide

Making An Account

  • Go online to kidtalk.app and log in using Google, Facebook, or Email.

  • Read and sign the Informed Consent form. You can change your consent settings later by clicking on “Settings” or “Consent Form” in the Menu Bar.

Adding Personal Information

  • To add basic information about yourself, click on “Settings” in the Menu Bar.

  • To add family members who will be in your recordings, click on “My Family” in the Menu Bar. You can then add an avatar and information about each family member.

  • You do not need to add yourself in “My Family” since your profile was created when you set up your account.

Making A Recording

  • There are three ways to add a recording:

  1. Record: Press the red button to start recording and the black button to stop.

  2. Extract Audio: Upload the audio from an existing video.

  3. Start A Conversation: Get a photo prompt and talk to your child about the photo. The recording will start automatically, so press the black button to stop.

  • In all cases, you need to press PLAY to hear your recording. From there, you can crop the recording, transcribe what is being said, tag the people speaking, and save the recording to your scrapbook.

Navigating Your Scrapbook

  • To view all of your recordings, click on “Scrapbook” in the Menu Bar.

  • You can listen to, retranscribe, and delete your recordings, as well as search through your transcriptions.

Sharing Your Recordings

  • To share your recordings with friends or family, click on “My Family” in the Menu Bar.

  • Click on “Invite User to Child’s Clips” and input the user’s name and email address linked with their KidTalk account.

Say What? Game

  • The “Say What?” game allows you to guess what other users’ kids are saying by listening to their recording, submitting your guess, and seeing if you were correct.

  • Click here for our blog post about the science behind this game.

  • Marking your recording as Private keeps it from being used in the “Say What?” game.

  • For more information on privacy, please visit the Privacy page and the FAQ page.

  • Once you are happy with the way your recording sounds, you can scroll down to tag the people speaking in it. You will be given the option of tagging one or more of the people you have added under “My Family,” as well as yourself.

  • You can also transcribe what is being said in the clip. In your scrapbook, you will be able to search for clips based on these transcriptions.

  • You will be given the option of marking your recording as Private. If you choose to do so, your clip will not be shared with other users in the “Say What?” game.

  • To save the recording to your scrapbook, click “Submit Clip.”

  • You can continue editing and saving snippets of your original recording once you have clicked “Submit Clip.” This will allow you to save one longer recording as multiple shorter clips. For example, if you record your child saying red ball and want to save the words red and ball separately in your scrapbook, you crop out the word ball and click “Submit Clip,” then close the “Uploaded!” popup, crop out the word red, and click “Submit Clip” again. This will create two separate clips in your scrapbook.

  • To return to the “Record” screen, click “New Clip.”

Navigating your scrapbook

  • To view your scrapbook, click “Scrapbook” on the Menu Bar.

  • Your scrapbook contains all the recordings you have made or uploaded so far.

  • Each recording is displayed as an orange box, with its label in quotation marks. Each recording also displays the date and time at which it was made, the people tagged in it, and, if any children are tagged, their ages at the time of recording.

  • To listen to a recording, just click on it.

  • The search bar at the top allows you to search for recordings of particular words or phrases

  • You can also use the grey “Display” filter to show only clips tagged with a particular person, and the “Only Clips With No Transcription” check box to only show recordings you haven’t yet transcribed.

  • You may want to share the recordings you make with someone else, such as another parent, a grandparent, or a nanny, and they may be able to make additional recordings with the same child.

  • To share your child’s recordings with another user, first use the Menu Bar to navigate to “My Family.”

  • If you scroll to the bottom of the page, you will see a section labeled “Access to [Child name]’s Clips,” and a button labeled “Invite User to Joe’s Clips.” Click on the button.

  • You can input the name and the email address of the user you want to give access to. The email will be associated with their KidTalk account.

  • Once you share your child’s recordings with another user, all of the recordings tagged with that child’s name will appear in their scrapbook as well as your own.

  • You will be given the option to give the other user Record Access to your child’s audio clips. If you check this box, the other user will be able to make recordings using their account and tag them with your child’s name. Those recordings will then appear in your scrapbook as well as theirs. If you do not check this box, the other user will still be able to see the recordings that you make of your child in their scrapbook, but they will not be able to make their own recordings of your child.

Say What? game

  • The Say What? game allows you to try and guess what other users’ kids are saying. To play, click “Say What?” in the Menu Bar.

  • The game will prompt you to listen to a recording from another user’s scrapbook. Press the green play button to listen to the clip.

  • Type what you think was said in the clip into the box labeled “Transcription, and click the orange “Submit Guess” button.

  • A popup will let you know whether your guess was correct. Your total number of correct guesses will be displayed in the top right-hand corner of the screen.
