Quick Start Guide

Making An Account

  • Go online to kidtalk.app and log in using Google, Facebook, or Email.

  • Read and sign the Informed Consent form. You can change your consent settings later by clicking on “Settings” or “Consent Form” in the Menu Bar.

Adding Personal Information

  • To add basic information about yourself, click on “Settings” in the Menu Bar.

  • To add family members who will be in your recordings, click on “My Family” in the Menu Bar. You can then add an avatar and information about each family member.

  • You do not need to add yourself in “My Family” since your profile was created when you set up your account.

Making A Recording

  • There are three ways to add a recording:

  1. Spontaneous: Press the red button to start recording and the black button to stop.

  2. Prompt Me!: Get a photo prompt and talk to your child about the photo. The recording will start automatically, so press the black button to stop.

  3. Upload: Upload the audio from an existing video.

  • In all cases, you need to press PLAY to hear your recording. From there, you can describe the conversation, tag the people speaking, add icons, and save the conversation to your scrapbook.

Navigating Your Scrapbook

  • To view all of your recordings, click on “Scrapbook” in the Menu Bar.

  • You can listen to and delete your recordings, as well as search through your transcriptions.

  • You can also crop your conversations into individual snippets, transcribe the snippets, and save the snippets to your scrapbook.

Sharing Your Recordings

  • To share your recordings with friends or family, click on “My Family” in the Menu Bar.

  • Click on “Invite User to Child’s Clips” and input the user’s name and email address linked with their KidTalk account.

Say What? Game

  • The “Say What?” game allows you to guess what other users’ kids are saying by listening to their recording, submitting your guess, and seeing if you were correct.

  • Click here for our blog post about the science behind this game.

Privacy

  • Marking your recording as Private keeps it from being used in the “Say What?” game.

Detailed Guide

Making an account

  • Enter “kidtalk.app” on your web browser, or click the link on our website.

  • Create an account using Google, Facebook, or Email.

  • Read and sign the Informed Consent form. You can customize how your data is shared with the checkboxes in the form. These sharing settings can be changed later using the “Settings” page, accessible from the menu bar.

  • You can access your Consent form at any time via the Menu Bar, which can be opened by clicking the icon in the top left-hand corner of your screen.

Settings

  • To update your personal information and sharing settings, use the Menu Bar to access the Settings page.

  • You can choose an avatar to identify yourself on the app.

  • Your Nick Name is the name you’ll be known by on the app.

  • You can also enter your Zip Code and Race/Ethnicity.

  • In Settings, you can adjust the sharing settings you entered in the Consent form.

Adding family members

  • To add family members who might be tagged in recordings, select “My Family” from the Menu Bar.

  • Select “Add Child” to add children you will be recording, and “Add Adult” to add other adults who you might want to tag in recordings.

  • When adding children, you will be prompted to input their year and month, as well as an avatar. This will allow the scrapbook to display their age and avatar on recordings you make.

  • After adding a child or adult, you can click on their name to edit their profile and their avatar.

Making a recording

  • To make a recording, select “Record” from the Menu Bar.

  • Select "Spontaneous" to start recording a conversation. The recording will start automatically, so press the black button to stop.

  • After recording, you’ll be prompted to play back the recording and listen to it.

  • Once you are happy with the way your recording sounds, you can scroll down to tag the people speaking in it. You will be given the option of tagging one or more of the people you have added under “My Family,” as well as yourself.

  • You can also describe what is being said in the conversation. In your scrapbook, you will be able to search for conversations based on these descriptions.

  • You have the option of adding icons to the conversation. These icons will allow you to better identify the content of the conversation and will be visible in your scrapbook.

  • You will be given the option of marking your recording as Private. If you choose to do so, your recording will not be shared with other users in the “Say What?” game.

  • To save the conversation to your scrapbook, click “Submit Conversation”. To return to the “Record” screen without saving, click “Clear Conversation".

Prompt Me!

  • To get photo prompts that you can talk with your child about, go to “Record” and click on the “Prompt Me!” button.

  • The app will display a photo and record while you talk to your child about it. For example, “What do you see?” or, in this case, “What instruments are the children playing?”

  • Click the black button to stop recording.

  • You will be prompted to listen to, tag, and name your recording and add icons before saving it to your scrapbook.

Uploading audio from a video

  • Another way to add a recording to your scrapbook is to extract the audio from existing videos. To do this, go back to the “Record” screen, and click the orange button that says “Upload”.

  • Depending on your device, you will be given the option to select a video from your files or from your camera roll.

  • After choosing a video, click “Import Audio from Video.”

  • You will be given the option to listen to, tag, date, and transcribe your recording, as well as add icons.

  • Note: If you are using the app on a mobile device, you may get a notice like the one seen here, which reads “This file type has limited preview support.” You should still be able to listen to and save your recording.

Navigating your scrapbook

  • To view your scrapbook, click “Scrapbook” on the Menu Bar.

  • Your scrapbook contains all the recordings you have made or uploaded so far, listed chronologically by month.

  • Each conversation is displayed as a blue box, and each snippet is displayed as an orange box. All boxes are displayed with any added icons. Any box without an icon is noted with a question mark.

  • The search bar at the top allows you to search for recordings of particular words or phrases.

  • The "Show" bar allows you to filter your scrapbook to show only snippets, conversations, or conversations about pictures from "Prompt Me!".

  • By clicking on "More Options", you will be able to see more filtering options. You can also use the grey “Display” filter to show only recordings tagged with a particular person, and the “Only Clips With No Label” check box to only show recordings you haven’t yet described or transcribed.

  • When a box is clicked, the box expands to display the description or transcription label, the date and time at which it was made, any comments, any icons, and tagged people. If any children are tagged, their ages at the time of recording are displayed as well.

  • To listen to a recording, click on the play button.

  • You and anyone you have shared your recordings with can add comments to individual recordings.

  • Conversations in the scrapbook also will feature an option to create a snippet from the conversation as well as any snippets you have previously created.

Creating A Snippet

  • Snippets are short recordings which are found in your conversation. For example, if you record your child saying red ball and want to save the words red and ball separately in your scrapbook, you crop out the word 'red' and click “Create Snippet”, then crop out the word 'ball', and click “Create Snippet” again. This will create two separate snippets in your scrapbook.

  • To create a snippet from a conversation, press the "Create Snippet" button.

  • Drag the rectangular buttons along the bars above and below your recording to crop it. To listen to your cropped recording, press the green play button.

  • You can then tag the people in the snippet, transcribe what is being said, and add icons. In your scrapbook, you will be able to search for snippets based on these transcriptions.

  • To save the snippet to your scrapbook, click “Create Snippet”. To return to the “Record” screen without saving, click “Cancel".

  • To edit the icons or label for a recording, or to delete the recording completely, click the pencil icon.

Sharing Recordings

  • You may want to share the recordings you make with someone else, such as another parent, a grandparent, or a nanny, and they may be able to make additional recordings with the same child.

  • To share your child’s recordings with another user, first use the Menu Bar to navigate to “My Family.”

  • If you scroll to the bottom of the page, you will see a section labeled “Access to [Child name]’s Clips,” and a button labeled “Invite User to [Child name]’s Clips.” Click on the button.

  • You can input the name and the email address of the user you want to give access to. The email will be associated with their KidTalk account.

  • Once you share your child’s recordings with another user, all of the recordings tagged with that child’s name will appear in their scrapbook as well as your own.

  • You will be given the option to give the other user Record Access to your child’s recordings. If you check this box, the other user will be able to make recordings using their account and tag them with your child’s name. Those recordings will then appear in your scrapbook as well as theirs. If you do not check this box, the other user will still be able to see the recordings that you make of your child in their scrapbook, but they will not be able to make their own recordings of your child.

Say What? game

  • The Say What? game allows you to try and guess what other users’ kids are saying. To play, click “Say What?” in the Menu Bar.

  • The game will prompt you to listen to a recording from another user’s scrapbook. Press the green play button to listen to the clip.

  • Type what you think was said in the clip into the box labeled “Transcription, and click the orange “Submit Guess” button.

  • A popup will let you know whether your guess was correct. Your total number of correct guesses will be displayed in the top right-hand corner of the screen.
